Getting started
What is Step Up for blood cancer?
Step Up for Blood Cancer is a walking challenge taking place this May. Walk 280,000 steps throughout the month for the 280,000 people in the UK living with blood cancer. Every step you take will raise vital funds for life-saving blood cancer research and support for those affected.
When does the challenge start and end?
The challenge runs from 1st to 31st May 2025. You can start tracking your steps on 1st May and complete them anytime within the month.
How do I take part?
You can walk on a treadmill, outdoors or walk from home. Walk 9,000 steps per day or top up with longer weekend walks. Complete your step count challenge however you prefer! Whether you go solo or join with friends and family, every step counts. Just sign up online, select your fundraising target, and start walking!
How do I sign up?
Simply register online and start stepping up for blood cancer!
Is there a registration fee?
No, it’s completely free to sign up! We encourage participants to raise as much as they can to support blood cancer research and support services.
Raising money
How do I fundraise?
When you sign up, we’ll automatically create a JustGiving fundraising page for you. You can share it with family, friends, and colleagues to ask for donations. We’ll also send fundraising tips and resources to help you along the way!
Is there a fundraising target?
There’s no minimum, but we suggest aiming for £150. Every pound raised helps fund life-saving research and provides essential support to those affected by blood cancer.
How do I update my fundraising target?
To update your fundraising target, login to JustGiving and click on ‘Edit page’ in the top of your screen. Here’s a guide on how to edit your page and your fundraising target.
What if I don’t reach my step or fundraising goal?
No worries! Every step and every pound raised makes a difference. The most important thing is that you took part and helped support people affected by blood cancer.
Can I fundraise offline (eg: cash, cheques)?
Yes, you can still collect money offline using a sponsorship form and add this to your page. Read more about how to pay in your donations. You can also pay in offline sponsorship by contacting our Supporter Relations Team. Email hello@bloodcancer.org.uk or call 0808 2080 888.
How can I add my offline fundraising (e.g. cash, cheques) to my JustGiving page?
Once you've signed up, go to stepup.bloodcancer.org.uk, login and click on ‘My Page’. Click on ‘Edit page’ and underneath your story you can input your ‘Total offline amount’. Read this guide for further information on how to add offline fundraising to your JustGiving page.
About your steps
How do I track my steps?
You can track your steps using:
- A fitness tracker or smartwatch (Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch, etc.)
- A health app on your phone (Apple Health, Google Fit, etc.)
- A pedometer or step-counting app
How do I log my steps on my fundraising page?
Your personal Step Up fundraising page was created for you when you signed up, and you can use this to log your steps. Watch this handy video to see how to add your steps to your fundraising page.
Once you've signed up:

- Login and click on ‘My Page’
- Scroll down to ‘Latest updates’ on your fundraising page and you’ll see an option that says 'Log fitness'.
- Log fitness by adding the steps you've completed to your page. These will all be included in our team step count on the homepage.
If you have any problems, please get in touch and we can guide you through it.
Do I have to complete 280,000 steps exactly?
Not at all! 280,000 steps is a goal, not a requirement. Just do what you can, and every step will still make a difference.
Can I take part if I have a health condition or limited mobility?
Absolutely! You can adapt the challenge to suit your ability—move in a way that works for you. If walking 280,000 steps isn’t possible, consider setting a personal movement goal, such as using a wheelchair, swimming, or another activity.
Can I do other activities instead of walking?
Yes! If walking isn’t for you, you can adapt the challenge—run, cycle, swim, or do another form of movement to reach an equivalent target.
Participating as a team
Can I do this as part of a team?
Yes! Walking together is a great way to stay motivated. You can join together with friends, family, or colleagues and work towards a shared goal while fundraising as a team. Once you sign up you can create or join a team fundraising page. Watch this video on how to create a team.
You’ll need a team name and team fundraising target to get started. When others sign up, they can choose to join your team by typing in the same team name, this will make sure you’re all part of the same team and your pages are together.
We ask that every team member signs up individually on our webpage so that we have your t-shirt size and contact details to send your rewards.
Is anyone in my area taking part?
Please ask your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours to get involved – the more the merrier! You can also find out what other people in our community are doing and if they’re local to you in the Step Up Facebook group.
How can workplaces get involved?
We encourage corporate teams to sign up! It’s a great way to promote team bonding and encourage staff well-being while supporting an important cause. Email hello@bloodcancer.org.uk for more information.
